"Kiss The Dragon"

Several years ago we had the trees and brush cleared from the hill behind our back fence that drops down to the alley. After clearing the brush we found a lot of the kids old toys. Golf balls, tennis balls, baseballs, hot wheels, and this dragon. I think it belonged to Brian. It's missing a wing and a hand. Since it was found two years ago it's been standing on the corner of the walkway in the back yard. Erin and Jill like to put a peanut in his mouth to see if the squirrels get it. They always do, and more often than not never disturb the dragon. I've never seen them get it, but when they do it would have to look like they are "Kissing The Dragon".

I would think that young squirrels are warned by their parents to stay away from my back yard. For, many squirrels enter, but few leave. Squirrels must talk about the ones who are "Never Heard From Again". When I think about the peanut being taken, I wonder if it's teenage squirrels proving their manhood. Some of them being taunted by their peers "You ain't a man till you Kiss the Dragon!"

Golf Update......

I played round 17 of the year Friday at Polo Fields GC. I shot a 49 - 48 = 97. About a month ago I played there and shot a 48 - 48 = 96. Do ya think 48 is about my average 9 holes there. I hit my normal bunch of bad shots but I really putt terrible on that course. I guess those greens are a little tough to read and I end up 3 putting a lot of greens. On the first hole yesterday I was just off the front of the green in 2, then proceeded to 4 putt from just off the green. I figured out how to keep from 4 putting, though. Just get my 2nd putt a little closer to the hole!

I played Kearney Hills GC in Lexington today. I played in a little 3 team scramble with guys from Toyota that I used to work with. I don't count scrambles in my rounds played for the year. We finished the front 9 in 6 under par, then fell apart and finished the 18 in 7 under. We finished 2nd in the 3 team tournament.

Water Tower Soccer Field

Did a little metal detecting at the water tower this evening. Started checking around where the Raggae Festival was last weekend but there was a wedding going on outside at the base of the water tower, so I thought I'd move out to the front by the soccer fields. I found $1.54, a set of keys and this soccer pin. I don't know what it says and don't even know what language it is. Any ideas? Click on the picture for a close-up. I cleaned it best I could. What looks like dirt is corrosion.

My Tomatoes are Doing Fine....

Here it is only May 28th, but my tomatoes are getting big. I had Erin hold a golf ball beside them so you would have a reference. I think July 1st has been the earliest I've ever had a tomato, but I plan on beating it this year. My target? June 21st!

Trip to Cave Hill Duck Pond

nu=325;>774>294>WSNRCG=3238563356326nu0mrj.jpg">

We made a trip to Cave Hill Cemetery Duck Pond today. I thought it would be a good time to see a lot of baby ducks and geese. There were a lot of baby geese, but we didn't see any baby ducks. Erin and Jill enjoyed feeding them, but didn't like getting their fingers nipped! After being bit once, they made sure they threw the bread quick when it was in their hands.
There was one peacock near the car and he kept his tail fanned almost the whole time we were there. I don't know who he was trying to impress. I didn't see any peahens around.
Mary Lynn, Judy, Pam, Erin, Jill, Kim and Me. Really, Kim was there, even though there isn't a picture of her. That's her arm in the bottom picture!

What would you do with.......

The Powerball Jackpot is up to 222 Million Dollars. I guess that's enough for me. I bought my ticket today. I think everyone at one time or another has wondered what they would do if they won a lot of money. You think about all the family members you could help, the things you could buy. New home, car. When I think about that I often wonder "Where do you draw the line on who you help?" Have you ever thought of that? I mean, immediate family, but then how far out do you go? What about friends. We each have a lot of friends. Which ones would you help out? How much? I've often thought about how the family would divide it, but beyond that a person would have to be very careful how many people he lets share in the pool. Money goes so fast that it would be pretty bad that in a couple of years you sat down and sighed "Where did it all go?"

It would be nice to win 222 Million and I guess I'd be willing to take on the headaches that go with it.

Memorial Day

I went to Zachary Taylor National Cemetery Monday to visit my Dad's grave, but it was so crowded I turned around and left. They were parking on Brownsboro Road and walking in. My Dad's grave is located in the very back of the Cemetery so I thought I'd just visit the next day. So, I went there today. I took several pictures and took them over to my mother. I thought she'd like to see the flags in place, and I was right. She appreciated the pictures. With all the flags in place at each tombstone it was very nice.
I have done some traveling. Seen a lot of the tourist spots in the United States. I've been to the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls, Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Honolulu, Painted Desert, Mt. Rushmore, and many other places that were neat and nice to see. But of all my travels, the most memorable place I ever visited was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. . We watched the changing of the guard, and a wreath presentation by Brian's grade school class. To see the reverence and respect given those entombed there is awe inspiring. You can't help but get chills and teary eyed. It's a feeling I'll never forget.
If you get a chance to visit Washington D. C., with all the things to see and do, all the monuments and museums to see, don't omit Arlington. It will be the most memorable place you ever visited.

Weissinger Hills GC Round 16 for the year

I played Weissinger Hills GC today, from the white tees. I shot a 44 - 44 = 88. Not one of my better rounds, but far from my worst. I continue to hit many good shots, but too many bad ones. I partnered with J. R. and we played Greg Lynn and Brian Blanton. We played 2 points a hole, low man, low team. We lost the front nine by one point but beat them on the back by 9. It was more of a collapse by them than better play by us. They shot 8 strokes worse on the back as a team and we shot one better. This was a great day for golf. So far this year it's been windy on the days nice enough to play, but today there was hardly any breeze at all.
Well, Happy Memorial Day to all and remember all the veterans who served to give you the freedoms you enjoy today.

Topsy-Turvy

You've seen the ads on TV. Topsy-Turvy Tomato Plants that yeild tons of tomatoes. At $19.95 they'd better yield the bacon and lettuce and toast and mayo, too. So, I made my own. I thought I'd try it out to see how it works. I can tell you, they're hard to transplant! This is a Grape Tomato Plant. I'll see how well it produces. I had to buy a very small plant so that I could get the roots through the small hole in the bottom of the pot. It's a big enough hole for the plant I believe. The only thing I've been able to tell so far is that it doesn't get much sun under the pot! I guess it will get more sun as it gets bigger. I'll keep you posted on this experiment.

Wow..more Bad Golf Round 15.....

I played at Penn Run GC today for the first time in many years. I think Brian and I went out to play it a few years ago, I don't know how many. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the course is. I've always thought the front side was in good shape, but even the back side was nice today. It might be because we've had a lot of rain, but the fairways were thick with grass and the holes that I didn't like before seemed much better with nice fairways! I don't know how the course will hold up under a hot, dry summer, but right now, I'd recommend it to anybody. Oh, I played pretty bad. I shot a 50 - 45 = 95. On holes 5,6,and7 I was a total of 9 over. On the remaining 6 holes I was 5 over. I'm hitting some of the best shots of my life right now but can't seem to be consistent. I just hit so many bad shots.
The front nine is extremely long for my game. Par 4's on the front nine are 308, 454, 406,451,and 388 yards. Other than the first hole, 308 yards, I have to hit woods to the green and usually can't even get there then. I mean, when you only drive the ball 175-180 yards average, a 454 yard par 4 is a good drive, good 3 wood, good 6 iron. Notice I said "good". I didn't put very many "good" shots together. I've just gotta get more consistency in my game!

More Bad Golf Round 14

This was my normal Tuesday Shawnee GC day. For some reason today they started everybody on the back nine first. I shot a 42 - 43 = 85. For those of you who don't know Shawnee, the 42 was on a par 36 nine and the 43 was on a par 34 nine. So my 43 was actually 3 strokes than my 42. I don't know why, but I keep being amazed at how short I hit the ball. I hit six irons from distances a normal golfer would hit a pitching wedge.
I play the senior tees. They've moved them back for the summer and on most holes it only gives about 10 - 15 yards advantage. I like the winter locations better. Makes me feel like a long knocker.
It's made me think though, that shooting an 85 and not being real pleased with it is a little out of line. There are millions of golfers out there who would be tickled to death with an 85, even from the senior tees.

Erin's Wildflowers

Several weeks ago Erin and I planted some wildflowers in the back yard in two different flower beds. The one that gets the most sun is starting to bloom. I couldn't get a good clear picture of this flower. I finaly realized it was because it was a little breezy outside the the flower was moving, not me. You can easily see this pretty pink flower, but if you look closely you can see small white flowers blooming, also. Good Job Erin!
I added this second picture 2 weeks later with many more wildflowers blooming. I figure not many people will scroll back through the postings to see this but I thought I'd add it anyway. I can't wait for Erin to come visit so she can see her pretty wildflowers.

Dance Recital

I gave Mark and Kim long enough to publish a post on the Dance Recital this past Saturday, so I'm going to have to post one. Those girls need to be published! The were so cute and they danced very well in front of a full Memorial Auditorium! Jill got very sleepy towards the end, but woke up when they started giving out the trophies. "Mine very first trophy! Mine very first trophy!" She said.

Golf Round 13 for 2009

I played my normal Tuesday Shawnee GC round today. I shot a 44 - 46 = 90. You know how most of the time when you play there's a part of your game that's pretty good but one part of your game is terrible. It seems that you can never get the whole game working at the same time. Well, that wasn't the case today. Every part of my game was bad. But, now that I think about it, I usually don't play well my first round after playing a scramble. I don't know why, but I don't. Just wait til next time!

Alice in Wonderland Ring

I metal detected at the Water Tower at the "Hole in One" tent area. I found 2 quarters, 5 dimes, 10 pennies, and an "Alice in Wonderland" Childs ring that I think is pretty neat. It has four figures around the ring. The Queen, Rabbit, Alice, and The King. There is some sort of mark inside the ring but I can't make it out. I don't know if the ring is silver or not. But, I do think it is a good find. The ring was found on the grass island median between the two driving lanes.

Baby Swans?

Mary Lynn and I went to the Zoo today withPam, Kevin, Mark, Kim, Nana, Erin and Jill. We had a great time. Jill got tired early, I think because of the big day she had yesterday, and fell asleep. But, a nice time was had by all. Now, the reason for this blog entry is that at one exhibit there was a Swan nesting out on a small island. We got into a discussion about "What is a baby swan called?" No one could remember but we knew it was something you don't hear very often. Well, a baby swan is called a 'cygnet'. There! Don't let anyone ever tell you that Bob's blog is not educational.

Mark Tabler sinks birdie putt on 18th hole to win Tournament!!!

Mark Tabler sank a 10' putt on the final hole yesterday to win the big Golf Tournament at Sun Valley GC. Team Tabler and Team Wagner were in a real battle all day, no team ever more than 1 stroke ahead, when Mark's brilliant putt iced the win on #18. Said Jit Hedges, Wagner Team member, "If they make one little slip we've got them"! Well, Team Tabler just wouldn't make that one little error and rallied with a birdie on each of the last two holes while Team Wagner ended with a par, par finish. The final result, Team Tabler -13, Team Wagner -12. Brian Tabler and Matt Wagner each won one of the closest to the pin awards on the par 3's.
Team Tabler also finished first in the door prize drawings with Brian getting first overall pick and Bob getting 3rd pick. Brian picking an expensive GPS system and Bob picking a Chest freezer.

Don't wait til tomorrow, read how it turns out here!

The big Golf Tournament is tomorrow. So, you want to know how it will turn out? Well, here goes. Team Tabler will finish 9 under, Team Wagner 6 under. Team Tabler will not win the tournament, but will finish in the top 5. Team Wagner, with 3 holes in one in their history, will finish well down the board. So, you heard it here. Now you can bet the Farm.

WWCD - What Would Calvin Do?

The wonderful Oaks Winner 'Rachel Alexandra' has new owners. They are thinking of running her in the Preakness Stakes. If this happens, who does Calvin Borel ride? Derby winner' Mine that Bird' , or Oaks winner 'Rachel Alexandra'? On first look, I would pick 'Rachel Alexandra' because I think she has a much better chance of winning the Preakness. But.....on second thought, there's no way I'm getting off a Derby winner who has a chance to win the Triple Crown, no matter how long the odds. If he gets off 'Mine That Bird' and that horse wins the Triple Crown, he'd be kicking himself for years. So, not because I think 'Mine That Bird' is a better ride, I think Calvin Borel will stay with him because of the Triple Crown chance. You heard it here first.

Golf - Round 12 for the Year

Played my Tuesday golf at Shawnee GC today. Shot a 42 - 46 = 88. Played pretty well, but couldn't make a putt. May game requires me to give myself a makeable par putt when I usually can't hit the green in regulation. Today I really made some nice short irons and chips to give myself very makable par putts, but then I couldn't make them! I didn't putt that bad, just couldn't hole out a putt. After the round I figured I must be saving them for Saturday.
* I metal detected The soccer fields at the Water Tower yesterday afternoon and found $1.51. I didn't find anything unusual other than the money I found, I found 12 dimes and only 1 penny.

Baby Dragon?

I metal detected for awhile this afternoon at Audubon Elem. School. I found $1.17 plus a small token like dragon. Does anybody know what this is? It's made out of the metal you'd make game tokens out of, like in Monopoly, so it looks like a little game token piece. It kinda has a pointed tail, that's why I think it's a dragon. Click on the picture and take a good close look.

Derby Predictions, some failure...

The Hot Flower bloomed on Oaks Day. The Iris hasn't opened yet, but close. Do I look like I had a Derby Winner? Well, I didn't. Does anybody know anyone who had Mine that Bird? Unbelievable. Nobody could bet on that horse. The only money put on that horse was bet on Calvin Borel, not the horse. It was a very exciting Derby, but I didn't win any money and Mine That Bird tore up all my superfecta and Trifecta Tickets. Only 364 more days until Derby Day!
