Water Tower Soccer Field

Did a little metal detecting at the water tower this evening. Started checking around where the Raggae Festival was last weekend but there was a wedding going on outside at the base of the water tower, so I thought I'd move out to the front by the soccer fields. I found $1.54, a set of keys and this soccer pin. I don't know what it says and don't even know what language it is. Any ideas? Click on the picture for a close-up. I cleaned it best I could. What looks like dirt is corrosion.

Maybe some of my across the pond bloggers will recognize the lettering. You are gonna hit it big up there one day.

Bad Bob, I think it looks like Russian or Eastern European letters. What a neat find! Now you have piqued my interest (I'm not sure what "piqued" means, I just like that phrase). I'm going to research it.

It appear I have all the time in the world to be doing this, which isn't really so, but it is fun (spoken like a true word nerd) and I'm on my lunch hour, so here is the short version:

Those are Russian letters, by golly, that spell 'FK Stavropol' at the top and 'Denamo' (Dynamo) at the bottom. After much googling and dead-ending, I believe the mystery is solved.

FK is an abbreviation for football (soccer) and Stavropol is a city in SW Russia. Stavropol actually has a soccer team called 'Dynamo Stavropol.' (Stop - I'm not kidding). There are all kinds of logos and major/minor soccer teams throughout Europe and they all have pins, shirts, logos, etc. This one from Stavropol uses part of the city's coat of arms as its logo. (Stavropol was one of 10 fortresses built by order of Catherine the Great to defend Russia. The castle/star is part of the city's coat of arms).

Stavropol has a sister city in the US (Des Moines, Iowa).

Is that cool, or what? You detected a bit o' history there, BB. Nice find!
