I was raking leaves in the front yard today, just to get a couple of garbage cans full for collection Friday, when I saw a little plastic envelope lying in the pile of leaves on the sidewalk. It was a Derby Pin still in the little envelope, brand new, but a little dirty from being outside since Derby Week. I don't know where it came from, but would have to assume that Ben and Donna must have lost it while they were here. Just wait to see what I find after I get my surprise gift on my Birthday!

Girl Scout Rip-Off
I like the Girl Scout Organization! I think it's a worthwhile group for young ladies. However, I think the Girl Scout Cookie campaign is one of the biggest rip-offs allowed to prey on the public! I realize I may get some hate mail on post, and will print a retraction if proved wrong, but this is my opinion. I realize this is THE major fund raiser for the Girl Scouts, and they need it. However, I would propose that anyone that's planning on buying $20 worth of cookies just donate $5 to the Girl Scouts, then go the the grocery and buy $5 worth of cookies. This would give the Girl Scouts more money than their share of your original $20, give you more cookies, and save $10 in the process.
Most of the cookie money goes to the Company that makes the cookies. They're the ones making the killing. I would love to see each troop bake their own cookies, then set up outside your local grocery, bank, etc., and sell them while asking for donations. At work, the parents of the these Girl Scouts could set a plate of cookies in the breakroom along with a sign-up donation sheet. Just about anybody who ate a cookie would put a donation down. This way all the money would go to the Girl Scout Troop with no money going to a large Cookie Company!
Can't wait to see the comments on this one!

Bad Golf Round 3 for 2009
I played Shawnee GC today with the normal tuesday group. There were 12 of us that showed up today. We had a little frost delay before we teed off of about half an hour. I shot a 43 - 41 - - 84. This time of year I'm very pleased with that. The temperature was probably in the mid 30's when we teed off but mid-40's when we finished. I've really been trying to work on taking my club away slowly on my swing, and following through. Those are my two swing thoughts, slow take away, and follow through. I had 3 triple bogeys today and still shot an 84. I had a lot of pars. My putting and chipping was good today. That's the way I was playing late summer, but lost my chipping touch. Maybe I'm getting that back. Overall, I was pleased with the way I played and was very pleased with being able to get out at all this time of year!

Storm Debris
It seems I go for days with anything to post, then all of a sudden I feel like I'm writing one post after another. This picture shows the storm debris piled at the corner of Rosewood Ave. and Baxter Ave., about 2 blocks from our house. You can see the damage to their wooden fence and the amount of debris they have to get rid of. There is a sidewalk where at the stuff is piled. Good luck pedestrians. This is a rather large pile, but piles like this are all over Louisville waiting for the city to pick them up. It's going to be a long while before they can get this amount of debris removed from all the city streets. The Mayor said that tomorrow is the last day you can dump debris at the collection sites without being charged. And, that all storm debris must be cut up into 3 foot lengths to be picked up by the city. Mary Lynn and I both wondered what is going to happen to all the limbs around town that are not cut up. Are they going to lay there forever! This pile, despite having the sidewalk blocked, is one the neater ones around town.
Kentucky Bourbon Tax
When I started my blog, I said I would stay away from politics and religion. Well, I have to make one little comment about this new tax they are passing on Bourbon. Out of the 120 counties in Kentucky, 55 of them are dry! They won't pay any of this tax, but they're going to share in the money collected! Hardly seems fair to me. Also, Jefferson and Fayette Counties will, I'm sure, pay well more than their fair share, but won't get the money returned to them at the same rate it goes in to Frankfort. Seems to me like it would be more fair to tax Baptist Churches.
Mary Lynn's round of golf
I accidently posted my golf report on Mary Lynn's blog. Most readers of my blog also read Mary Lynn's If you'd like to read about my 9 holes today, click on "Lovely Wife". We had a little trouble this morning with the blogs and when I signed on my blog I didn't realize I was on Mary Lynn's blog, so, anyway, that's how it happened.

Cemetery at the Zoo
Most people who visit the Zoo never notice that there is a cemetery there. I't a small family cemetery located not far from the Giraffe exhibit. I've been to the Zoo many times but never noticed it until this past summer. The graves are very old, early 1800's, but there always seems to be flowers are a wreath placed there. I wonder if the Zoo does this, or family descendants, or the Zoo is required by the family to do it. Anyway, I found this to be interesting.

New exhibit at Zoo attracts thousands
I went to the Zoo today to see their new exhibit. There was a large crowd around this compound to watch the amazing headless Ostrich walk around and never bump into anything. He was unbelievable! I had to stay around long enough to watch them feed him. That was even more amazing. I don't think I'll go into that.

February 3, 1959
50 years ago today. Hard to believe. The day the music died according to "American Pie". People who were young then know what a shock it was. Three big recording icons gone all of a sudden. Buddy Holly, established with many hits, Richie Valens, a couple of hits and up and coming major star, and "The Big Bopper", probably a one hit wonder. I found it funny several years ago talking to some of the younger guys at work that they thought "American Pie" was written about John Lennon.
Buddy Holly is still one of my favorite all-time recording artists.

A good explanation....
Common sense explanation as told to Norm by Cliff on "Cheers":
"Well you see, Norm, it's like this...A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

OK, I've got some Ice Storm pictures, too.....
It seems to be a very popular post, all the ice storm pictures and stories. I took a lot of pictures around Louisville, but I'm just going to post 3 pictures that I think gives a good indication of all the damage.
I'm not sure how these will appear on my post and in what order, but by my description you'll be able to tell which picture I'm talking about even if it's not "picture No. 1". Click on the pictures to make them bigger, which I recommend.
1.. This picture was taken on Rosewood Ave., a block behind the house. I liked this one because it really shows how the trees were bent over from the ice. Usually, these trees are standing straight up.
2. This is our street. The big branch in the foreground fell across the street about 50 yards in front of me as I was walking up the street. In the background you can see the street was already closed with a tree down and an electric line down.
3. This was taken at the intersection of Lexington Rd and Cannons Lane. The view is looking down Cannons Lane towards Sececa Park from Lexington Road.
